My students come from diverse backgrounds with different personalities and learning styles. They are unique, energetic, and eager to learn. My goal is to have my students feel excited to come to school. I want them to feel welcomed, loved, and respected as individuals. Our classroom is a place where children come to build relationships, collaborate, inquire, and become lifelong learners. As first graders they are learning from and exploring the world around them. They are also discovering what best suits them as learners.
Although some students are able to learn and complete their work effectively in a traditional school setting many students benefit from moving around and choosing alternative seating. I want to provide my students with that choice. First graders already have a good idea on where they learn best and by providing them with seat choice I am empowering them. Once students leave the classroom they will be placed in an ever-changing world full of choices. My job is to guide them into making choices independently. Many flexible seating options also stimulate students' sense of touch. This can help students to focus and process information.
