My students need bean bag chairs and an area rug to have comfortable and flexible seating when in the Restorative Justice room and while in the after school program.

The Grizzlies is who we are. Talented, ambitious, and inquisitive. For the 2018-19 school year, I've gotten the opportunity to work with 6th-8th grade students in our after school program enrichment classes for an extended learning opportunity. With getting to know the students through my time in the Restorative Justice room, I have learned that my students not only have voices to be heard but a story to tell.
I see myself as being so lucky to have such an amazing opportunity to work with middle school students.
The drive, the knowledge, and the humor they have inspires me to not only be a better professional, but a better individual. I do what I do, for their now AND their future.
In the after school program, students mostly do not like sitting at their desk during homework time because all day they have been sitting at their desk. They stand, sit on the floor, or lay on the floor during homework time. I began asking students to “please sit down at your desk” and they would, but would end up getting up again. Some students would sit down but never mind their homework. Most of the class was NOT focused on their homework. I asked why they didn’t want to sit down one day and they said the seats were uncomfortable, we can’t concentrate, it stressed us out, and we’d rather sit on the floor. So I let them and then I thought of the flex space we have for students in the basement. I figure this would be a perfect spot for them to concentrate on their homework. It's a totally different space from being in the classroom.
I’d rather students sit on bean bag chairs and focus instead of being on the floor.
The board games are for brain breaks in between homework times.
Safety is our priority. The beautiful neighborhoods my students come from have unfortunately been stained with poverty, drugs, and violence. Fortunately, the school I serve is in the heart of where my students live. What ever my students may encounter, I desire the the Restorative Justice room to be a safe space for students to do classwork , deescalate if there is a conflict, and to complete any assignments that needed to be made up. The bean bags and area rug (for both spaces) will be used to create a comfortable working environment for students to relax and complete assignments.
