Although this is my first year as a full-time teacher, I have had many experiences with the students throughout our district. Many of our students come from low income households, broken homes, homelessness, and/or trauma. We also combat issues of poor attendance and tardies. This year I have the privilege to work with ~120 7th Grade students as their Math and Science teacher.
They need a welcoming environment that encourages regular attendance and provides options to help them focus, self-regulate, and become independent.
Many of our students have diverse learning needs that do not fit into a standardized teaching model. While I strive to generate a positive classroom climate, I am hoping to provide my students with many different seating options that will further promote a safe and home like environment.
Studies show that students who have the opportunity and ability to choose their own seating, based on personal preference, allows them to work at their full potential. With this ability of choice, student are able to motivate themselves and take more ownership of their learning environment thus leading to a healthier and more productive classroom climate.
My classroom will be designed to meet the diverse needs of all my students.
Many of the options students will have will promote and develop skill sets(independence, collaboration, and community) that will benefit them through out the rest of their academic and professional careers.
