I work with 106 6th grade students who come to me with various abilities, interests, and needs. I work with students who have disabilities as well as students who are gifted/talented and students of all abilities in between. My students are hard workers, but it can be difficult for them to remain engaged and focused for our 90-minute communications arts class. They need a classroom environment that is engaging and meets their needs as individuals.
My 6th graders are at the age where they are becoming more independent and figuring out who they are as individuals.
My students need to feel that they are valued for who they are and that their thoughts matter. They are discovering that what works best for one student may not work best for another. They need to be able to make choices for themselves and have an active role in their education.
Being able to provide a variety of seating options in my classroom will increase students' engagement and provide opportunities for them to choose the type of seat that allows them to be the best learner they can be.
My Project
This year, I have implemented flexible seating in my classroom. My students have greatly benefited from the variety of seating options in my classroom. After gathering feedback from my students, I found that the students overwhelmingly prefer the task chairs. These chairs provide just enough movement for my students to help them stay engaged and comfortable.
Increasing the number of task chairs in my classroom will allow more students to utilize the type of chairs that they prefer.
Allowing my students to choose the type of seating that works for them as individuals has created a classroom environment more conducive to learning while providing my students opportunities to explore who they are as individuals and what works best to help them learn.
Each of my students is unique, and I work to provide personalized learning opportunities for each of them. Because task chairs are the type of seats my students prefer, expanding the number of task chairs will ensure that more students are able to use this type of chair and meet their own personal needs as learners.
I want to ignite a passion for reading and learning in general in all my students. When students have a choice in how they learn, learning can be fun, exciting, and meaningful. Please consider donating to my project to help my students reach their full potential as learners.
