Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher of students that come from mainly low-income/high poverty households, I see that my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I do my best to make my classroom a safe and inviting place where students have the opportunity to have meaningful learning experiences.
My students strive to do their very best, and at the end of each day, that is all I want for them.
From the first day they walk into my classroom, I focus on their potential and the growth they can achieve with me. I may not be able to control what happens at home, but I can definitely control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in an ambitious, creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire my students to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Each week, students get to choose a location in the classroom where they work the best. My students currently get to choose from floor cushions at lowered desks, carpet time with a clipboard or sitting in a regular chair at a desk or tall table. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, participate in class discussions actively, and focus more on their work when they get to choose.
My students are more focused on their work and there are far less disruptions when they are given a choice of where to sit.
The items I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools and ball chairs will allow students to sit at desks/tall tables but will still allow movement that a typical chair would not. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom. The bouncy bands will help those students that prefer a traditional desk and chair, to be able to move without choosing an alternative seat.
I have seen how giving the students a choice, can positively affect their work and overall classroom demeanor. I hope having additional seating options will help us grow even more!
