Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a very diverse community. Families in our district come from over one hundred countries and their children come to school with English as their second, third or even fourth language. These students arrive at school with a wide range of life experiences but often, with very limited experience in a structured, focused, shared learning community.

Flexibility, flexibility, flexibility, that's what it's all about!

Think about your favorite place to read, your best spot for writing, the most constructive space for brain storming. These different types of spaces support creativity and engagement, and they change over time.

Young students also need flexibility and variety to relax and fully engage in their learning environments. Sometimes, a traditional table and chair are fine, and sometimes learners need a different perspective.

My Project

Traditional classroom furniture puts all students in the same chairs, sitting at the same tables. No matter what your age is, different people work better in different situations. Cushions will let my students leave their tables and create a comfortable space to work in. Lap tables provide a stable work surface for students who need to work closer to shared materials, especially examples of writing.

Once a child has settled into a physically comfortable learning space, they can concentrate their energy on the academic challenges facing them.

An uncomfortable chair, a noisy table group, or any number of typical classroom distractions can draw a student away from the task at hand.

The ability for a student to self-select the best learning environment for themselves is a huge step towards self-management. Providing young children with a variety of options demonstrates a respect for the many ways that people learn, and allows them to experiment with options as they find what works best for them.
