Our school has been around since the 1950s. In fact, some of my students' parents and grandparents attended the same school. It is a small community with a lot of big hearts. The kids and families love the community and it has a big-family feel.
Teaching in public schools, we have many different challenges, with children who need very diverse learning environments.
While my students love their school, community, and classmates, being in a classroom that was built so long ago, brings challenges. These youngsters are our future teachers, CEOs, engineers, doctors, and maybe even a future United States president and deserve the best education I can give them.
All students deserve to be comfortable in their learning environment. Having flexible seating choices allows students to sit at different heights and positions. The donut seats will be used at my low work table so kids can bounce as they think, read and write. The Portable Lapdesks give students the opportunity to have some privacy while they are working.
Having flexible seating gives students a sense of ownership and empowers them to make choices.
The idea that students may choose where they sit at different times of the day gives them choice during school, which is not often. By moving to a different place and seating arrangement students get up and move which keeps them from being sedentary.
