I teach at a Title 1 School in Scottsdale, AZ. My 1st and 2nd grade ELL class is full of eager, excited, motivated, and FUN students. They truly make my job the best job in the world.
Our school houses a very diverse population with 60% of students on free and reduced lunch.
Our school fosters students who speak a multitude of different languages, come from very different backgrounds, and many receive specialized educational services within the mainstream classroom.
This school year, my school received the prestigious "A+ School of Excellence Award" because of our commitment to implementing sound educational practices, our full and forward S.T.E.A.M. implementation, our student and staff diversity, and our numerous teams and clubs that fit the needs of everyone.
My Project
I teach 1st and 2nd grade English Language Learners. As an educator, I recently had an epiphany after sitting for hours through many professional development training: It is really hard to sit all day! My legs hurt, my back hurts, and I get antsy.
I can only imagine how my students feel!
They get movement time through games and songs, but not nearly enough that they need for their brains to work at maximum effort.
I have recently researched flexible seating in the elementary classroom and found that research states that it is best for kids to have choices regarding HOW they learn every day. To do this, I want my classroom to be more child-centered by offering some different flexible seating options depending on what activity we are doing. Some of the benefits of flexible seating are increased calories burned, increased metabolism and engagement, and, the most important, increased oxygen flow to the brain. I want students to be more self-aware and independent with their learning.
I have chosen some materials to help do this: yoga mats, yoga exercise balls, and bed risers. I plan on giving them three concrete options to choose. I have seen yoga mats and exercise balls in classrooms, and the students can move and stabilize their core, which helps them to focus more on their learning. I have chosen the bed risers to raise up some of the desks so that students can stand while they are working! I think it will be amazing and I could really use your help to implement this learning this school year.
