Flexible Seating & Organization for Phenomenal First Graders

My Project

Flexible seating gives students choice over their learning environment and helps them take ownership over their learning. Currently, during independent work time, students are able to choose between sitting at their table and sitting on the floor. I am hoping to add more seating choices such as wobble seats, the wave seats, and the floor desks. The floor desks will allow those who choose to work on the floor an easier way to sit and do their work. The wobble seats and wave seats will give students who choose to sit at their table an option to get their wiggles out while still working on their task.

While the flexible seating will help give students ownership over their learning, the book bins and cube organizer will help students learn responsibility.

The current organization system in our classroom is not working as students are all going to the same spot to get their materials. This is not only time consuming, but also causes students to put their materials away disorganized. The cube organizer will allow the materials to be spaced out more and next to their table. These will have their book bins and other materials for their table group. The book bins will allow each student to have a better way to take care of their books. My class loves to read and cherishes their books. The book bins we have now are a thin plastic and many have been damaged throughout the year. The book bins that I have selected for this project are a thicker material that is more durable.

I have seen how giving choice empowers students to take ownership over their learning. I look forward to seeing how a better organization system will help students learn responsibility while also making our transitions more efficient.
