As a social worker in a diverse, low income / high poverty elementary school in a Title I district, I'm looking for cost effective and creative ways to help teach social emotional health to our young learners. Many of the students I work directly with have experienced trauma and/or may have special needs. They also could have mental health needs, be classified as emotionally disturbed or have specific learning disabilities. I want to help them be successful in the classroom!
My Project
Flexible seating options are needed in my classroom/office for the students that I service. My students have an array of needs including their own special needs as well as social emotional needs. Their time in my classroom/office is a time to learn and rehearse calming strategies and learn other management or life skills.
Offering such options also allow for students to feel safer and grounded in my classroom/office to increase their well being and attain overall social emotional skills.
My students will be able to better focus on learning skills if they are able to choose options that offer them a variety of ways to increase their concentration.
