My students need a redesign of classroom seating including wobble stools and ball chairs in order to support their movement needs and optimize their learning environment.

My Students

Imagine being an active ten year old whose body is constantly growing and changing, having to sit at a desk all day long. It'd be tough, right? Movement is an important part in children's brain development and it aids in focus.

My school is located in an urban Maine community in which a large percentage of the student population is economically disadvantaged.

Over 60% of our student population receives free and reduced lunch.

Students in my classroom are enthusiastic learners, but like most fifth grade children, they have difficulty sitting still all day long at a desk.

My Project

Children love the opportunity to utilize "comfy spots" in my classroom. Currently, those spots are limited to throw pillows, a corner table, and a wooden chair. My class is filled with active learners who would benefit from seating which will promote movement, collaborative learning, and comfort.

Flexible seating will help allow children to have an opportunity for movement while being productive workers.

I have selected two types of resources which can enable children to move while working at their seats or around the classroom. Wobble chairs and stability balls provide a more active sitting opportunity. Children will be permitted to wiggle, wobble, and balance while they watch a lesson or complete their work. Research has shown that the slight but continual movement needed to keep balanced on these seats improves posture, strengthens core muscles, and boosts focus. Not only do these seats enhance attentiveness, but they can help reduce obesity by keeping kids active.

Fulfillment of this project will support my students' learning as well as improve my classroom by reducing the amount of undesired behaviors. Through flexible seating, I will be able to provide the appropriate movement and stimulation that my students need. With a reduction in unwanted behaviors, we can spend more time learning and being on task.
