I teach 25 amazing Kindergarteners in a low-income/high poverty school district. Most of my students qualify for our free lunch program. Many of my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My students love coming to school and are eager to learn! I strive to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are kind, thoughtful, and caring.
They are strong. They persevere... and they just want to feel important, safe and cared for. I love that I can provide that for them 8 hours of the day.
According to research, my students will be more focused and more engaged, able to better collaborate with others, and obtain higher achievement if I use flexible seating in my classroom.
All students learn differently.
I think flexible seating empowers students to have some choice and control. It allows them to choose with whom they work with and where they work. They can also change their position and location as needed. When they move they are burning calories, increasing blood and oxygen flow, and increasing metabolism. It also helps them stay more alert and focused.
As far as collaboration, flexible seating allows students to find partners easier and have a more intimate conversation. It is hard to make eye contact and have good conversation over tables when there are twenty-three other students trying to do so as well. Collaboration and sharing inspiration are so important and flexible seating allows them to maximize the benefits of it!
