My Students

Our small school district is in a rural area that is comprised of students from area small towns. Many of our students come from low-income households with our county ranking as the poorest county in the state of Wisconsin. This does not hamper our students' desire for learning. Many students living in stressful financial situations come to school for an escape from the worry of adult pressures.

This is the second year our school district has had Family and Consumer Education programs for grades 7-12 after a long absence of this department and there is a great need for students to learn basic living skills to become productive citizens and break the cycle of poverty-stricken adults.

The Family and Consumer Education program is a great asset to this cause.

My Project

Flexible seating options in the Family and Consumer Education classroom will help my students achieve greater participation and learning success. This project will be used to purchase 5 NeoRok Soft Stools and 2 Zenergy Ball Chairs which allow for gentle movements during academic activities. These chairs are of various heights which will allow students with various body types to utilize them.

Flexible seating options are often addressed in elementary school, however, many high school students would also greatly benefit from flexible seating.

These are not only students with special needs but can benefit the general population of high school students. Flexible seating options have proven to increase student participation and engagement, and allow for greater academic success and participation. Many of my students often have a difficult time sitting in their chairs and will try to rock back on standard chairs. They are not doing this out of boredom or habit, but seek movement. This movement assists some students with their ability to concentrate, therefore allowing them to fully participate in the learning activity.
