I teach at a very diverse school in Houston, TX. We have a high percentage of English Language Learners. For many students this is their first experience in an American classroom. Unfortunately, we are one of the 41 counties affected by Hurricane Harvey. Some of our students have lost their homes or have been displaced during the last nine months. I have 21 students and they not only love to learn, but also love to be on the move. My students need a variety of seating options in my classroom to help them meet their learning needs. Flexible seating will allow them to be more comfortable and better engaged.
My Project
I want to bring flexible seating to my classroom to provide them with alternative seating options rather than the standard chair. There are many benefits to having flexible seating in the classroom. A few include a more student centered classroom, different types of seating for comfort, increase productivity, and maintain focus. Flexible seating is also great for my students with ADD, ADHD, and/or other special needs. It allows them to move and sit in unconventional ways that help them to focus better. The wobble chairs and wobble cushions allow for movement while sitting, unlike the standard classroom chairs. The floor seats will give the students a comfy way to sit on the floor and complete their activities.
This project will turn my chair to table environment to a physically comfortable learning environment that meets the needs of my students.
