My students need flexible seating options such as the chair, stools, and cushion so their attention is focused on learning, rather than remembering to sit correctly all the time in a desk and hard seat.
Being a first grade teacher for over eleven years, I have had many students enter my classroom and become my "kiddos". One of the first lessons that I teach is that we are a family that loves and takes care of one another, treating our friends with respect and kindness. Sometimes that can be quite challenging, but it is a challenge that we never give up on.
Our school is located on the Florida gulf coast; however, many of our students do not have the ability to travel just a few miles to see the gulf.
Most of our students come from low income families, and don't have very much. When another student needs crayons or a pencil, the students easily jump up to share with others. They are kind, helpful, and care for one another.
My students are full of energy, love learning, want to be engaged in various activities, and move a lot! We do not stay in one place for very long as the students need frequent movement. I want to fill my classroom with learning activities and various items that will be inviting for students to enter and learn in.
My Project
Using flexible seating in the classroom will give students the opportunity to choose something other than a traditional classroom chair. By using flexible seating in the classroom, this allows students to sit in a more comfortable way instead of sitting back to back, feet in front, and keeping all four legs on the floor, etc, etc! Students entering the classroom will be excited to know that they won't be directed constantly to sit correctly. Rather than hearing me telling them how to sit, they will have the opportunity to choose how they want to sit throughout the day, and choosing a way that works best for them for a particular lesson.
Everyone learns differently and flexible seating, such as the colorful stools, wobble chair, and beanbag is more comfortable for students & inviting for the students to see when they enter the room.
