Flexible Seating in an Autism Special Day Class Part 2

My Students

What would you do if you couldn't communicate? If a day is ruined when the schedule changes, your favorite toy isn't available, and you have to be flexible? These are just a few issues my students face on a daily basis.

I teach a 3/4/5 Special Day Class (SDC) for students on the Autism Spectrum at a Title 1 school in Concord, California.

The diverse population of students at our school is mirrored in my classroom, as Autism knows no ethnic or socioeconomic boundaries. Some of my students have other diagnosis in addition to Autism, such as speech and language disorders, Intellectual Disability, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

My Project

My students have sensory needs that can often interfere with their ability to complete schoolwork. A common way of addressing these needs is to offer sensory tools which includes alternative seating arrangements within the classroom. My classroom furniture is traditional (desks/plastic chairs/tables) and consequently not always functional for my students.

My intention is to create a warmer and more inviting environment where students feel calm, relaxed, and able to focus on learning.

To begin this process I would like a couch and saucer chairs to place in my meeting area for whole group activities. Eventually I hope to have another couch as well as armchairs/rocking chairs.
