How do you like to sit when you're doing work and learning? For so many, the traditional rows of student desks facing the teacher just doesn't provide the best learning environment. Every year, I receive a group of 29-32 fourth and fifth graders. These 9-12 year olds are curious, enthusiastic and capable learners that are ready to make choices and be responsible. I have the challenge of providing the best learning opportunities and instruction to meet each of their needs.
I want to create a classroom that makes these preteens feel comfortable, empowered and engaged.
Fourth and fifth graders love to have choice. They are increasingly aware of each other and often enjoy working together. They are the oldest in the school and sometimes elementary school feels too small for them. I want to meet their developmental stage with a classroom environment that allows them to choose and practice their maturing social skills. My students continuously strive to be positive leaders, reflective learners and kind community members.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent, group and partner work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students can choose to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: standing table, regular tables, or floor tables. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given choices.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The Wobble Stools will allow students to sit at a table while engaging in a safe movement that builds core strength. The Crazy Creek Chairs and the Meditation Cushions will allow my students to sit on the floor comfortably. The Wobble Cushions can be used on the floor or on regular chairs. These cushions offer a safe way for students to move while working. I chose these items specifically because they are easy to move around the classroom, easy to clean, easy to store and durable.
