As a teacher in a low income/high poverty school, my students face multiple challenges daily before they even make it to school. I try to expose my students to as many new and interesting experiences as I can. My goal as a teacher is to provide fun, educational, interactive, meaningful activities that will prepare my students for future success.
I teach students in grades 6-8 with a variety of disabilities including autism, emotional disabilities, learning disabilities, and cognitive disabilities in the inclusion and resource setting.
Due to these disabilities many of my students struggle to stay focused on a task for longer than 10-20 minutes. This lack of focus keeps them from picking up on necessary concepts. Flexible classroom seating can help students to stay focused on the task at hand and allow them to move when necessary without distracting other students.
My students attend a Title 1 school. Many of the students I serve are from low income, single parent homes. Over 90% of our students qualify for free/reduced priced meals. Our special needs students receive support in reading, language arts, social and coping skills.
My Project
My students struggle daily to stay focused on the task at hand. Normal school desks and chairs are uncomfortable and monotonous. Flexible seating adds a little fun and choice to the day.
Often times just the option of a choice of where to sit can make all the difference.
These high top tables and fun stools and chairs allow students to sit at the height they want and in the type of seat they want. The bean bag chairs are a comfortable option for independent reading and partner work.
These seating options also add color and depth to the classroom that normal classroom seating options cannot do. This gives students a fun environment that also helps them stay focused.
