The classroom resources I am requesting will help my students focus on academic tasks instead of their need to fidget. I am a special education teacher and the majority of my students receive instruction in the general education setting. This means the academic level of rigor is high. This level of rigor often leads to stress and loss of student focus. Many of my students are unable to focus on classroom academic tasks due to the inability to control the impulse to fidget. This constant movement often leads to classroom disruptions which can lead to disciplinary action. This movement can also distract other students which leads to unnecessary ridicule and disruptions.
These classroom resources will give my students the opportunity for constructive movement without distracting from the educational process. These materials will also give students the opportunity to deal with frustration independently. Many of my students frustrate easily with academic and social tasks. This frustration can lead to verbal or physical outbursts. Fidgets are tools that students can use to relax. One skill we work on daily is coping with classroom stressors. These materials will give students an opportunity to deal with this stress on their own. Standing desks are great for students that struggle to sit still for long periods of time. If these students are allowed to stand and work they are less likely to distract themselves and others around them. Wiggle cushions are used to give students the opportunity to move without having to get up and walk around which can be distracting. Foot rest fidgets are attached to the bottom of desks and allow students to move their feet and legs without making noise and distracting students around them. Often times all a fidgety student needs is the opportunity to move appropriately.
