Flexible Seating for Workshop Classroom

My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. I teach AP, on-level, and English Language Learners in the 11th grade. Our district has established a daily lesson cycle of reader/writer workshop in ELA classrooms, so students read for at least the first 10 minutes of class and are writing on a daily basis.

In our current technological climate, it is such a joy to watch students rediscover reading for pleasure.

Sometimes I have to insist that they put their reading away so we can continue with applying those skills gleaned from the writers' craft in our writing. During a class period they read for fun, read for craft, discuss their discoveries, and use those to inform their own writing.

Our community suffered many losses from Hurricane Harvey this past year, and my students have had both negative and positive experiences during this period of recovery. It is important to me that my classroom be a welcoming and comfortable place for them to spend a part of their day.

My Project

My students read books and respond to their reading in writing every day. Bulky desks are uncomfortable and create a crowding situation in the classroom. They are also hard to put together for reading groups and collaboration.

Students are more comfortable when they can make choices about their seating.

Some like to sit on the floor, some in a bean bag chair, some in a desk, and some prefer to sit at bar-height. When we have flexible seating and choice, students can work more productively. We can also easily rearrange the classroom to suit our grouping needs on a day-to-day basis.
