Students at the school I teach at have various disabilities. The program is designed for students from the ages of 18-26. Students come to the school program to learn vocational skills, adult daily living skills, social skills, mobility skills, and leisure skills.
Learning in a smaller setting is very beneficial along with hands on experience, modeling, and practice.
It has been found that differentiated instruction to fit each person's needs shows the most success. Upon completion their social skills have blossomed, they are employed and possibly driving/living independently. This growth that is shown over the years is amazing!
My Project
When students are comfortable in a setting, classroom management, learning, and respect all seem to come together. Many students with disabilities also have Attention Deficit difficulties which makes movement essential. While teaching social skills it is important to often move away from the traditional desk seating and allow students to explore other possibilities whether in the classroom or community. The classroom is a great place to explore what works for each individual by giving choices such as cushions, bouncy bands, comfort chairs, etc.
Their ability to choose what is comfortable in a learning environment is often the key to enhancing the learning process.
When working in groups and teams, doing individual work, taking assessments, students will have the opportunity to sit in seats that make them feel more at home and relaxed.
