When students are comfortable in a setting, classroom management, learning, and respect all seem to come together. Many students with disabilities also have Attention Deficit difficulties which makes movement essential. While teaching social skills it is important to often move away from the traditional desk seating and allow students to explore other possibilities whether in the classroom or community. The classroom is a great place to explore what works for each individual by giving choices such as cushions, bouncy bands, comfort chairs, etc. Their ability to choose what is comfortable in a learning environment is often the key to enhancing the learning process. When working in groups and teams, doing individual work, taking assessments, students will have the opportunity to sit in seats that make them feel more at home and relaxed.
