My students need to learn to work collaboratively and cooperatively. These flexible seating resources will give my students the chance to practice the skills they need in order to be successful socially.

My Students

Our class consists of 8 students and they are placed in this small ratio because their communication deficits, socialization issues, and academic needs prevent them from succeeding in a general education setting at the current time. These students attend a public school in Brooklyn and they are bussed to our program from all over the borough.

Our 4th and 5th grade students are hardworking, funny, and eager to learn, They also have Autism.

Every day, these students are working to improve their communication skills and academic knowledge so that they might move to a less restrictive environment.

My Project

Our classroom is made up of 8 boys with Autism. Every day, they are making great improvements on their executive functioning skills of joint attention, verbal communication, cooperation and follow through. We need some options for flexible seating that will allow for them to practice working with others. The boys need lots of practice in this area.

By allowing my students to work in different configurations throughout the day, we can maximize their attention while giving them a chance to practice their social and communication skills by working collaboratively.

The new table and chairs will provide an extra motivation for my students while they work together.

For many typically developing children, the skills of sharing and requesting materials, asking peers for help, giving feedback to classmates and maintaining personal space come naturally with time. For our students with autism, these are skills that need to be taught and then practiced regularly in order for them to become comfortable and familiar. These materials will provide the perfect place for them to hone these skills.
