Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are characterized from the outside by high poverty rates, low income, and well over eighty percent of students receiving free and reduced lunch.
On the inside, these kids are characterized by a desire to succeed, to better their lives through education and having a thirst for knowledge, despite facing challenges that many of us will never know.
Walk into my classroom and you'll find over twenty students who come from all over the globe, speak five languages, and yet work together like a well oiled machine! These students learn math, science, language arts, and social studies at our school. Equally as important they are being taught how to keep a positive mindset, persistence through adversity, and social skills to carry them successfully not only through SOLs and state mandated assessments, but through their lives.
My Project
The materials that are being requested will have a magnificent impact on the students who learn within my classroom walls. This year I began experimenting with flexible seating for my students, and the results have been exquisite.
Providing students with choice empowers them.
The American Psychologist William Glasser said, "We are driven by five genetic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun." Allowing students choice over their seating provides them with power and freedom of choice, a sense of belonging, and of course fun!
Sitting in flexible seating and working on whiteboards, has provided my students with opportunities to work in ways in which they were not used. These have been positive changes for the modern student. Bucking the trend of only using paper and pencil, while sitting in hard blue plastic seats has given my students this year a sense of belonging, and power. I want to continue to create those feelings for these students as well as those who will be in my classroom in the future!
