My students need flexible seating options for our group resource room. We need a chair set, bean bags, and stools. While students have growing options for flexible seating provided in their general education classroom, the group resource room does not have these options.
All of my students are ages 5-7 years old and receive Special Education services. Their needs are as unique as they are! They enjoy participating in their classroom community, playing with cars and trucks, and big pushes on the tire swing. All students currently on my caseload are African American and are eligible for free/reduced lunch. Students' families live in our neighborhood communities and make attempts to be involved in their children's education. These kiddos are such a joy in their classroom and school communities!
These students with disabilities need flexible seating options for our group resource room. While students have growing options for flexible seating provided in their general education classroom, the group resource room does not have these options.
When using flexible seating options, students show improvement in classroom engagement, specifically increases in attention and academic stamina.
Providing these options across all environments, particularly those environments in which students engage with academics, allows these students to access their academics more fully. Multiple seating options allows for children with differing needs to feel comfortable and regulated in their classroom.
This project will help support the group resource room, which is accessed by multiple students with disabilities across grade levels. I have asked for multiple types of differing seating, including; cube chairs for core stability, wiggle chairs for attention, beanbag chairs for sensory needs, and disc seats for added wiggling.
