My students need flexible seating options to help them learn best within a controlled environment. Students having the option to sit, stand, recline, lay, or sit traditionally helps to maintain focus during a long school day.
The 7th grade students that I teach are phenomenal. The majority of my students come from a home where parents are struggling to make everyday needs a reality. Some parents work multiple jobs and some are not present in the students’ lives at all. My students come to school every single day needing and seeking a positive and safe learning environment. Our school is a low income, high needs area.
I want my students to feel relaxed, welcome, and at home in my classroom.
Many of my students do not have the opportunity to be kids at home, so I strive to let them be just that in my classroom.
The atmosphere when they walk in my room is so important. They are growing and learning in the same small, loving, tight-knit school community that inspired me to become a teacher. Every student is a reader, an author, a dreamer, a thinker, and a dreamer. These students will be our ambassadors, travelers, scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers, lawyers, and so many other amazing things in our community. Middle school can be such a hard three years to navigate.
My Project
Students in my classroom have been positively begging to have more flexible seating options that what I am already offering them. Students in my room flock to the gaming chairs that were donated by a parent last fall, and some of the most effective student projects and work has happened in those different style seating options! Students having the opportunity to complete work in an environment where they learn best is truly an amazing opportunity. Aside from making my classroom more of a home, and less of a traditional learning environment having flexible seating options allows me to maintain their focus for longer periods of time as well as change up our learning structure frequently!
Teenage bodies are made to move!
Flexible seating options will allow them to move freely and discreetly without distracting their classmates. These tools will enable them to be more successful authors and readers in our Reading and Language Arts classroom.
Many of our students are dealing with attention deficits, and having the ability to flexibly stand, lounge, sprawl, or sit traditionally will allow me to accommodate every learner in a way that does not single them out as "fidgety" or "different" learners.
