My students are incredibly dynamic, creative, and hardworking. They are committed to working through their respective challenges and being successful in the classroom. I am blown away by the fact that many of our students have already mastered one or two languages at home and are working to master the English language at school too!
These students are true leaders and changemakers and I sincerely believe that the future of our community is in our classroom today.
As they practice how to look out for and care for those in their classroom community, I am confident that those skills of compassion, empathy, and responsiveness translate into the ways they interact with those in their neighborhoods and broader communities.
This past school year, the only flexible seating options I had for my students were 2 thrifted comfy love seats, a fold-out chair and a bookshelf bench I had set up near the library. Apart from those options, students could sit on the floor or in their classroom desk chairs. These four seats were hardly enough for all 26 students in my classroom. Most, if not all of my students asked to sit in those seats and, often, I'd have to pick and choose who would be able to use those flexible seating options during the day using a raffle system or choosing students who were "on task."
The students who were allowed to use those few flexible seating options showed increased attention and focused when they were able to use seating that best fit their learning style and needs, in comparison to their peers who were seated at their desks or on the floor.
Students who spent the majority of a lesson wiggling around or fiddling with supplies were suddenly calm and were able to focus on the lesson when they were given seating options that met their kinesthetic learning needs. Unfortunately, because I only had 4 flexible seating options, many students were consistently unable to use these learning tools.
With the funding for this project, more of my students will be able to benefit from flexible seating options that are proven to increase focus and overall student learning. These flexible seating options would give more students the opportunity to optimize their learning while meeting their unique learning needs.
