This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are inquisitive and want to make sense of the math they are learning, not just memorize how to do it. These students have a future ahead of them where higher-level thinking, problem solving, and collaborative skills will be required.

My students need a classroom environmental change to not only assist them with collaborative skills, but to also offer a warm and cozy, inviting element to distract from the devastation that many of the students still face at home due to Hurricane Harvey.

My Project

Students are more engaged when they are comfortable. The classroom climate is very important to have a culture of learning. This is true for physical comfort as well. There is a reason why Starbucks has a collaborative, comfortable, flexible seating setup. Standard desks situated in rows do not foster open communication and collaboration, and are not comfortable.

As long as a students' postures and movements do not disrupt others learning and comfort, they should literally be allowed to choose any number of places to land in the classroom.

This project will allow for Starbucks-like options around the classroom for students to select as a working environment for collaboration. Specifically, this project will purchase a cafe table and 4 cafe chairs.
