I am so very fortunate to teach at a low income/high poverty school. 90% of my school is on free and reduced lunch, and they come to school to begin their day at the breakfast table surrounded by friends and adults who love them. Many of my students come to school ready to learn through the many challenges they are facing at home, and school has become a safe place for them to be. My students love to learn and participate in cooperative group activities, especially activities that allow them to move and think outside of the box. The boys and girls in my classroom enjoy laughing while they learn and are always incredibly proud of their accomplishments because for many of them, learning does not come easily. I cannot control what happens at home, but I can control the environment they have the opportunity of learning in. I can create a learning environment that is inviting, promotes learning, and allows for my students to be kids! I aim to provide the safest, most engaging environment for us to come together and achieve our goals!
My Project
My students need different seating options to meet their learning needs. Not all students, or adults for that matter, do their best work in hard chairs at a desk surface. Some would rather sit on the floor, or on a chair or stability ball that allows them to move while they work.
My students need alternative seating options so that they can do their best work every day.
Sometimes sitting up high, or down low, or having the option to stand and work is just what my students need to meet their learning needs.
In my classroom, I have many students who come from trauma, as well as many others who have ADHD and/or other behavioral struggles. Because of this, many of my students struggle to keep still in their desks during work time. My students will use the wobble stools, balance balls and stands to keep themselves actively moving as they work. As they keep their bodies active, their brains will stay active as well. The stability cushions will be used for my students who choose to sit on the floor to work. These will keep their bodies moving, and comfortable as they complete their best work in their place of choice (the floor). My classroom is full of very bright, harsh fluorescent lighting. My students will benefit from the soft white light covers as they will create a calm, relaxed feel in the classroom, which will promote more focused students.
I want my students to know that in my classroom I work with them to find the best workspace for them. Even if that means sitting on a stability cushion on the floor, or making small bounces on a stability ball at a desk, I work with my students to help them do their best!
