Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the proud teacher of 25 energetic, fun-loving fourth grade students! As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. 72% of our students are English Speakers of other Languages. They face daily challenges just to learn the English language. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Learning a new culture along with a new language is hard work, but my students take on this challenge on a daily basis with positivity.
These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". My focus is to provide my students with a warm and inviting environment where all students have the opportunity to learn new things in an exciting way.
My Project
"I want to sit in a desk to learn all day long", said no kid ever! Flexible seating options allow my students to take charge of their own learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom where they feel they can be successful. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to learn. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The lap desks will allow my students to learn where ever they are most comfortable. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that would prefer a different setting for independent work.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
