Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I consider the entire student body to my students! I am my school's teacher librarian, and our school library is dynamic. The library is used for not only promoting literacy, but the space may be used for students who are writers one period and scientists the next! Our students range between 11-14 years old, the perfect age to hone in on foundational skills, such as organization and studying. In preparation for high school, many of our students are exploring their interests through our selection of electives, getting the extra help they need from teachers during our weekly tutorial periods, and checking out books on a regular basis.
To support the vision of our school, our library is about learning and exploration.
Students see the library as the hub of our school-- a place where everyone belongs! The library is a safe place for all students, so my goal is to maintain the integrity of our space, while also showing students the library is an another classroom on campus.
My Project
Given that the library is a space for the diverse community of learners at our entire school, it must be a space that meets the learning needs of all students. Providing flexible seating options allows students to make the best choices for their learning preferences. Since choice is essential to positive learning, these seating options will help my students learn!
Students that are given power and ownership over their learning are more likely to succeed.
Because the library is available and visited by all types of learners, it’s important to provide an environment that is not only inviting and comfortable, but one that promotes collaboration. The low coffee table allows for students to work together, while individual seating, like the bean bag chairs, the poufs, and the gaming chairs, gives students the option to work anywhere in the library independently or as a group. Plus, softer lighting creates a more inviting space for students, similar to a coffee-shop style environment.
