Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are kind, respectful and energetic. They enjoy anything that has to do with technology, Pokemon or Takis (the chips). They have the best intentions but struggle to find the focus and motivation to learn and achieve their goals.
I work in a title one school where students are still getting a firm grasp on the English language and struggle with the overwhelming demands of common core.
It is hard for the students to keep their focus and attention through multi-step problems or long reading passages.
One of the biggest things we focus on here is having a positive growth mindset. Even when things prove to be difficult, we can change our mindset to be positive. One of my students started the year saying, "I don't know, I'm not smart." Now, he responds to challenges with "This is tough, but I can do it with a little help."
My goal, as their teacher, is to help them believe that they can be successful, they are able to go to college and they can learn because everyone has their own special qualities. I am hoping that by being able to redirect their attention and focus, we can be successful!
My Project
Students LOVE to be comfortable in the classroom. They have a lot of opportunities to be out of their desks. They can find comfortable spots to read, to write and to work with others. I want to create an environment where students can relax and learn at their own pace. That's why we are asking for more flexible seating in our classroom! We would love more wobbly stools and some beanbags!
How cool would it be if students could build their reading stamina while relaxing in a Big Joe bean bag!
I always try to encourage students to be comfortable while reading and flexible seating options encourage students to relax and get lost in a good book. Students also love working with their partners on the carpet and sitting close to each other to solve the problem and think critically. Plus, I want my students to be excited to come to school and I know that having more options will help students look forward to school and reading!
