My school is full of students from all walks of life. Some students come from well-rounded, middle-class families; more than half of my students, though, come from low-income households. They come to my school, and my classroom, specifically, for what they don't have, and what they need. What do they need, you may ask?
My students, above all, need to feel at home in our classroom.
Some of my students' basic needs aren't met at home, let alone more than that. They aren't taught respect, manners, or organizational skills. In our classroom, they need to feel comfortable, feel challenged, feel accepted, and feel loved. And this is where I come in.
My Project
How long can you sit in a chair at a desk comfortably? An hour? 30 minutes? Currently, my students are expected to sit most of the day, in their chair and at their desk. We do have transitions, and get up and move around, but not all students learn their best in this environment and need more choice.
With these flexible seating materials, when students come in the mornings, they will have an opportunity to choose whichever seating arrangement best fits their learning needs.
Some students may prefer to sit on the floor, with a lap desk, while others prefer standing at a counter size table, while others may prefer a fidget tool, such as a bouncy ball chair, a chair with a band at the bottom to push their feet against, or a stool they can wobble back and forth on.
All of these items will help students be comfortable in their learning environment.
