The students in my classroom consist of Kindergarten, First and Second graders with intellectual impairments with different abilities and disabilities. We will have 16 students ranging from the K-2 grade levels. Students are working on a variety of skills based on their current level of functioning. They are the hardest working children in the school!
We'd like to create a trauma sensitive approach to support students within our classroom using flexible seating.
We are trying to do this by creating an area for students to unwind and use alternative methods to refocus their bodies. With your help, we can help them achieve this!
My Project
This year we will have 2 classrooms sharing a room. Our goal is to get rid of all the desks and use a flexible seating approach. There are many positive benefits to using flexible seating in our classroom such as: 1) Effective learning. Studies have shown their is an increase in cognitive performance. 2) Improved behavior. Students are better able to focus on completing the tasks that are presented. 3) Improved health. More room for physical fitness opportunities throughout the day in class! We are requesting balance ball chairs, butterfly chairs, portable lap desks and inflatable chairs to give students a choice of where they will be sitting. These items will allow students to use movement during their work time to focus on what is being presented to them and benefit them in many of the ways stated above! The rugs and organizer cubbies will be used to help set the classroom up when we merge the two classrooms into one setting.
Students will use this flexible seating approach to help them attain their utmost potential this year, allowing them to be creative, incorporate gross motor breaks throughout their sessions and focus on the task at hand.
