Help me give my students flexible seating! We need to have alternative spots to work that accommodate every kind of body. These backjack chairs will allow students to work comfortably on the carpet or low tables.

My Students

Our students are part of a fifth grade team in Burlington, Vermont's largest city. Our school district is the most diverse in the state.

The city we teach in is a refugee resettlement center, and, as a result, we teach students who have arrived from all over the world.

In addition, our students range widely in ability level. We have students who perform above, at, and below grade level. What they all have in common is that they love to learn.

My Project

Our students need to move their bodies in a variety of ways. They also need alternative spaces to do their best thinking. Our classroom has standard chairs and tables. We also have a carpet where we gather in large groups. Some children have a hard time working in close proximity to others. They need a seperate space, but they need to have back support. Also, some students with larger bodies are highly uncomfortable sitting at the carpet.

These backjacks will allow students to have flexible seating and make the choices that are best for their bodies and learning.

Those who need more space will be able to comfortably work away from others. They will also provide back support to those who need support for their type of body.
