Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are brave, curious and full of energy. They make things different and exciting. While reading and writing is a challenge for most of them, they approach their work with positive attitudes and perseverance. They are caring, kind and have created a classroom community where we can all strive for our best and help each other along the way.
I teach one hundred, kind and curious students.
A majority of them are not reading at grade level and are English language learners. They all receive special services including, but not limited to, reading assistance, academic/behavior support and free lunch.
Our school is in a vibrant and loving community with a wide variety of cultures and traditions. While it has a lot to offer, the students still face challenges of poverty and gang violence. Despite all the trials they face outside of school, my students come ready to build relationships, grow their skills and achieve their goals. We celebrate wins together each day.
My Project
High School can be a long day. Having somewhere comfortable to learn is essential, especially for students with high needs. Right now, my classroom is a mishmash of random tables and chairs (some broken) that work against creating a comfortable learning environment.
My goal is to create a space with flexible seating that offers choice and comfort to my students.
I am asking for wobble stools to accommodate kinesthetic learner needs, as well as bean bags and a futon to provide soft spaces and comfort to students. My students spend seven hours a day seated on hard, worn down chairs and tables. I would like to begin offering them the opportunity to relax their bodies and focus on working their brains.
