My students come from a culturally diverse neighborhood. Over half are low-income and most come from homes where English is a second language. Many of the families are not able to afford to make classroom donations, and are just able to provide the necessities of life. The pandemic has added to the stress for many of these families.
I love the rich diversity of culture and backgrounds my students bring to school with them every day.
They face challenges with grit and determination and positive attitudes. They are hard-working, energetic, and eager to learn! I learn new things from them every day.
My Project
Giving students choices is one of the best ways to increase engagement. I have learned that students work more effectively if they are comfortable. By giving my students the opportunity to choose the place and in our classroom where they can work and be comfortable, that engagement will increase tremendously.
Having various seating options that can be moved to different areas of the classroom during independent work time will increase the comfort, and consequently, the engagement of my students.
Some choose to work at a large table, while others want to sit or lay on the floor and spread their materials out. There are others who just need to move their bodies to engage. Having these seating choices gives each student the opportunity to work in a way that individualizes their educational experience.
