Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some people will say that they can sit at a desk just like I did but in reality, the times are different. I didn't grow up having a computer so readily available. I can't compete with the visual stimulus the students receive playing these games and watching videos. Since I cannot control what happens at their homes, I am at a disadvantage trying to educate these students.
Flexible seating is allowing students to focus and succeed because they are in a position that is the most comfortable to them.
As an adult, you may prefer to have a standing desk than to traditional desk. So, do children have these preferences. I know I squirm at trainings when I am seated for hours and I have learned to control my body. I would like to offer these same options to my students.
My school has a majority of English Language Learners and have two Special Education classes as well as over 900 students. Yes, 900 for an elementary school! Our district will be phasing in Special Day Class students into general education classrooms over the next few years. I need to be prepared to provide an environment conducive to all students.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. I would like to offer options during independent work times and thus, hope to minimize distractions and behavior issues. They will choose a location in the classroom that works for them. I can only offer them to sit or lay on the floor or against the wall. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice. My hope is that they will good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The bench is convertible from a bench to a table/bench combo so, they can sit on the bench, sit on the floor and kneel at the bench or seat at table with the feet dangling allowing movement. The cushions to sit or lay on the floor comfortably as the floor is hard. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out.
I have seen how having options in other areas positively affects my students, their work and their behavior with the additional options. Please help us grow and succeed.
