My fourth graders are active, inspiring and engaging children! In a title one school set in the heart of Waikiki, we don't always have all of the resources that would benefit our children.
With a diverse population from all over Micronesia, Polynesia, Asia and many other fascinating places around the globe, more than a third of the students at Jefferson are English Language Learners.
Each year, my class shows a diverse set of needs, and I do my best to accommodate all of these needs in whatever ways I can! Through DonorsChoose, I hope to offer even more to them.
My children show kindness, empathy and care for each other each day. They are eager learners and helpful classmates, and I hope to provide them with resources that serve them best!
My Project
My classroom is a place that encourages free movement. Students stand and move around as they need, and travel to different areas of the room to work where they feel suits them best. Currently we have individual desks, group tables, a carrel, carpet squares, open areas of rug to sit on, as well as several stability ball chairs. Allowing my students the ability to move around as they need, and to choose an area that works best for them helps to meet the variety of needs in my classroom, and to increase student ability to focus on the task at hand.
I want to provide more of my students with options for seating that will continue to help them remain comfortable and engaged.
We spend a lot of time moving back and forth around the room during the regular school day, however, there are times when students have to stay seated and focused on tasks for longer periods of time. It is because of these times that I have chosen to add more stability balls to the selection of seating choices in my classroom. Unfortunately, several of our current stability balls have broken, so only a few students have the option to use one each day. I hope to replace these and add to the collection so that more students can benefit from them!
I want to better meet the needs of more of my students that may have difficulty attending to tasks of longer length. When using a stability ball as seating that engages the entire body, it will help these students to better attend to whatever task they are working on.
