My classroom is a place that encourages free movement. Students stand and move around as they need, and travel to different areas of the room to work where they feel suits them best. Currently we have individual desks, group tables, a carrel, carpet squares, and open areas of rug to sit on. Allowing my students the ability to move around as they need, and to choose an area that works best for them helps to meet the variety of needs in my classroom, and to increase student ability to focus on the task at hand. I want to provide my students with more options for seating that will continue to help them remain comfortable and engaged. We spend a lot of time moving back and forth around the room during the regular school day, however, in fourth grade, there are times when students have to stay seated and focused on tasks for longer periods of time. It is because of these times that I have chosen to add stability ball chairs to the selection of seating choices in my classroom. I want to better meet the needs of my students that may have difficulty attending to tasks of longer length. When using a stability ball as seating that engages the entire body, it will help these students to better attend to whatever task they are working on. Choosing the seats with wheels will allow them to add even more movement options to help keep themselves engaged as well. We currently pass around the one rolling chair that I have to a different student each week, and they love it!! I want to be able to provide more seating options for my students that enhance their engagement abilities and add comfort and choice to their days!
