Flexible Seating for Active Students

My students need an active learning environment that allows them to move. Three Hokki Stools and three stability balls will give my students some flexible seating options.

My Students

Do you sit on a hard chair for 6 hours? Well, my students sit on hard chairs or on a hard tile floor for about 6 hours a day. They often ask to sit around the room on small carpet squares. In not so many words, they are clearly asking for movement and comfort.

My students come to school everyday ready to learn.

We all learn, work and grow together. I have the honor of teaching a wonderful group of children that range greatly in learning styles. My students are a unique group in that I teach students with cognitive delays to a cluster of gifted students all within the mainstream classroom. Interventions and enrichments are needed daily. My students are unique in their own ways, but all share the drive and passion to learn. Our school is a suburban school located about 15 minutes outside a major city. Our students come from a variety of socioecomic backgrounds. We educate over 900 students in our elementary building. Each grade level having 6-7 classrooms. We currently function as a Title 1 school and have several special needs units. Our schools free and reduced lunch rate has continued to increase to 40.7%. We are seeing more and more transient students coming in and out of our school as well as multiple families living under one roof.

My Project

When my students are asked, "Why are you here?" They shout, "To learn!" When asked, "Who is responsible for your learning and behavior?" They shout, "I am!" They take great pride in knowing why they are in school. I have high academic expectations for my students. I believe that the Hooki stools and stability balls will give my students the ability to move freely and be comfortable while still maintaining focus to learn.

Research states that the Hokki stools provide physical and mental benefits in student development.

Both stability balls and Hokki stools help students sit up straight and engage core stomach muscles. The brain is also actively engaged to maintain balance on the ball and stool. The balls and stools will create a quieter learning environment as our metal chairs are very noisy and distracting on our hard tile floor. My goal is to have enough functional seating options for every student in my class.
