Flexible Seating for a Blended Learning Environment

My students need flexible seating options, including a futon, stability balls, and stools to support their blending learning environment; I want the classroom to feel like a comfortable home away from home.

My Students

Imagine having twelve people crammed into a small apartment, nowhere quiet to read or study, and the expectation that you'll care for your younger siblings. Imagine coming to school each day and not knowing the language, the world around you confusing and frustrating. This is the experience for many of my students. I work in a Title I school in Westminster, California. Roughly 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and 70% are English Learners.

Our school serves a hard-working immigrant community with students who are full of potential and enthusiasm to learn, but who lack the resources outside the classroom to help them achieve their goals.

I strive to make my classroom a retreat from the chaos of their lives, a place where they can explore new ideas, take academic risks, collaborate with their peers, explore new technology, and feel safe and welcome.

My Project

My classroom is a dynamic blended learning environment that offers students frequent opportunities to think critically, utilize technology, and to move. I'd like the furniture to further support student learning by offering them voice and choice in how and where they work.

I want this classroom to be a home away from home for my students, while also offering a variety of seating options for each student's learning style.

The futon would allow those without a quiet place at home to work in cozy comfort. The Stability balls will support those who need some proprioceptive input, while the bar stools will allow students to feel as though they're learning in a hip cafe.

These options will support the kind of 21st century collaborative learning we usually do in our room while meeting students' needs.
