99% of my students are children of military service members. They often have to deal with the hardship of parents deploying overseas for months at a time. The majority of my students come form low-income households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. Almost half of my students have IEPs or 504 plans. Recently, I have added two students from a special education/self-contained classroom to my roster on a push-in basis.
Despite obstacles, stress, and disabilities, my students come to school each day ready to seize the opportunity of education.
Everyday, they greet me with hugs and a symphony of "Good morning!" They love challenging themselves with novels, writing creatively, and discussing elements of language arts. They are all little pieces of my heart, and I am determined to be the teacher they deserve.
My Project
I find that my 6th grade students love learning, just as much as my 3rd graders do. The difference between my 3rd and 6th graders is that with the 6th graders, I find that they crave more responsibility. They don't want to be treated like "babies."The want to be allowed to make decisions, otherwise, they end up distracted and uninterested.
They can't always choose what they're reading or writing about, but having the opportunity to chose a space that is conducive to their own learning style would ultimately keep them engaged in the lessons.
I would love to have a futon in the room to make the space seem less like a typical classroom, and more of a fluid learning environment. Students can opt to sit on the futon, instead of a desk if that means that their focus is on the assignment. Additionally, high tables and stools provide another area that students can choose to learn in. With the composition notebooks and highlighters, they can create interactive notebooks. This gives them a choice in how they take notes on lessons and what those notes look like.
Whichever option they choose, be it standing, the futon, or a stool, they are taking responsibility for their learning. Implementing the choice of flexible seating would improve engagement, morale, and ultimately academic success. Thank you for considering my students as recipients of your generosity.
