For my students with deployed parents, having a comfort area would be highly beneficial; whether it's the "Unique Loom Shag Rug" to lay on after a sleepless night, or soft "Big Joe" chairs to sit in as they sort out their emotions. I want my students to know that what they feel is valid and that it is okay to take a few minutes to regroup. Students with ADHD often get stomachaches due to medication, and they would also benefit from a comfort area. My students with ADHD need help concentrating on the lessons; however, they often don't want to be singled out by being forced sit at the front of the class, which is typically the first solution. With the "Fidgeteeze" chair bands, my students with ADHD can bounce their feet on the bands discretely, no matter their desk location. This would let them use that movement to channel any nervous energy, helping them concentrate on the lesson. The dry erase boards would be helpful in alleviating the some of the anxiety that my students with dyslexia have: I've noticed that these students tend to become frustrated when writing. They have to erase frequently, making them feel like their work is messy. Dry erase boards would be the the perfect tools to use for handwriting practice. My students come to school with added stress and anxiety, whether it be from worrying if their parent will return safely from a deployment, or from worrying about not succeeding academically due to dyslexia or ADHD. They need tools to help them deal with added stress, and with your help, we can give them these tools. Together, we can make a difference in their lives. Thank you in advance for your empathy and generosity.
