My 34 amazing third graders have been placed in my classroom for instruction at an accelerated pace, including fourth-grade math. Our classroom is within a Title l, K-4 public school in Phoenix, Arizona. Our school is located within an urban neighborhood that traditionally consists of dual language, multigenerational families who qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs.
My students advance their learning through the consistent and purposeful use of Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures and the incorporation of the Mind Up Curriculum.
The success of each individual student elevates the learning of all. Our discussions include typical content but also extend beyond academics as we expand our social and emotional intelligence. We enjoy the process of learning together. The students challenge themselves and support each other respectfully. This is truly an amazing group of young individuals.
My Project
Providing flexible seating options to my third-grade students is just one component of our flexible learning environment. The physical component of flexible learning includes wobble seats, a variety of stools, kneeling mats, and kick bands. An environment in which students feel safe to move, choose the best tools for their needs, and accept individual choices, promotes a supportive culture of learning. A wide variety of choices is critical to establish balance and acceptance for each learner's needs.
My students' physical movement enhances their learning and flexible seating provides them with the opportunity to move while engaged in active thinking.
Although my students are often moving around the classroom during our learning and transitions, they also engage in "seat work" that requires work at a table or desk, on the floor, or with technology. I respect their different learning styles and flexible seating allows for movement during the less physically active portions. Flexible seating also negates any stigma associated with wiggly bodies. I believe that it is developmentally appropriate for eight and nine-year-old children to be physically active and I choose to support their biological needs while meeting our learning objectives.
