My Project

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. In our classroom, we call these "success spots." Students know that in choosing their success spot, they are choosing a seat for them where they are comfortable and distraction-free. The seats that are chosen for this project will be used for our guided reading table and are called wobble seats.

Students are more engaged in their work when they are given a choice of WHERE to work.

Many students use flexible seating to have some sort of movement while they are working, and these wobble seats will give students the opportunity to move around while not being distracting to their peers. Our classroom has many floor choices for seating, but we do not have seats that give the option of movement while staying at our desk or at a table. This will provide just that!

The power of choice in a work environment has been huge in our classroom and helps teach accountability as well. The headphones have been added for students to use in these flexible seating spots for our benchmark reading program and EPIC (a reading application). These are especially helpful for students who are just now gaining those reading skills and might need a word sounded out by the computer. Headphones help continue that distraction-free environment.
