Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are bilingual gifted students with lots of energy and curiosity. They have an unstoppable drive for learning. They always strive to grow academically and emotionally.
My families value education.
They are believers in education as the ultimate equalizer. My students are super heroes. We continue to work on building our self efficacy both academically and emotionally. We believe that becoming more empathetic within and without our classroom community will help to be better able to contribute to today's global society.
My Project
Flexible seating motivates students to read and choose seating that works best for them. During independent and buddy reading times they can choose where they sit in the classroom. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, near the windows, or sitting or laying on the floor with their books. I have noticed their engagement when they are allowed to choose where they sit. After talking about making good seating choices they are allowed to choose their spots where they will engage in reading on their own or with a friend. The rolling bookshelves will help with moving genres of books around the room for easy access.
My students are learning to self-monitor their behaviors and choices during independent reading.
They are noticeably more engaged when working on readingThe items that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options. The comfy floor seats will allow them an additional seating option. They appear lightweight and can be easily moved around the classroom.
I have seen how choice can positively affect my students learning and knowing that people cared to help them build their classroom community helps them understand that with empathy and compassion they can contribute to the classroom through their willingness to share, and their drive and motivation for learning.
