My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district (about 72% of students received free/reduced lunch), my students are often faced with challenges, both inside and outside of the classroom, challenges many adults will never deal with. Despite the many challenges they face, I want them to feel that school is place where the possibilities are endless, if they can dream it, they can make it happen!

My students are energetic, creative, and very spontaneous.

They like to move, they love to read ,and they love lots of positive attention. The challenges they often face outside of school may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". I want my students to feel at home in my classroom.

My Project

Students need to move throughout the day, giving them appropriate items that will allow them to move, while remaining quiet, while still learning is a win-win for them! If a student is not comfortable while they are trying to learn, it can lead them to be distracted and unproductive. Currently my students are allowed to work around the room, although the only flexible option I currently have are some small round cushions, and I do not have enough for each student. Allowing kids to get comfortable while learning helps them focus and be productive.

Students feel empowered by having some choice in where or how they will sit to learn.

Many students like to stand during the day while working or thinking, a standing desk gives them they ability to stand and still continue working. Having bouncy bands on desks can help keep students moving and working - all while being quiet and not distracting other students.
