Flexible Seating and Coping Strategies

My students need flexible seating in the school counselor's office. Flexible seating in my office gives students more opportunity for movement. There is a lot of research on the advantages of flexible seating.

My Students

Many of the students that attend our school have experienced some sort of trauma. We are focusing on social emotional learning and teaching the students how to handle disappointments and frustrations. We are a diverse school serving 700 students in pre k - fifth grade. We have a 30% mobility rate and 80% of the students are receiving free and reduced lunch. We gave students a survey at the end of the school year about the use of calm down boxes. 75% of the students used the calm down box at least one time during the 2016-2017 school year.

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. It is very difficult for students with ADHD to sustain attention and sit in school. When students come into my office they have been sitting in a classroom. I want students to have a choice in where they want to sit especially since they are dealing with complex emotions. I have a calm down area and stools and books for handling anger would be a nice addition to this space. The moment I saw these stools I knew they would be helpful for my students!
