I have the privilege of working with students in grades 2-5 with a varying range of special needs. Students in my setting have significant challenges in the area of cognitive, speech, motor, and behavioral skills. Many also struggle with sensory processing in addition to their other disabilities. This directly impacts how they interpret and interact with the world around them.
Each day, my students inspire and guide my classroom team as we work together to learn academic, social, and life skills.
In short, they are our heroes as they show us the true meaning of conquering every obstacle, no matter how large or small.
My Project
Positive energy release during the day is beneficial for everyone. Students in my classroom are most successful when able to move and readjust their positioning in a variety of ways during the school day. We currently have a limited number of options at our disposal but find the ones we have to be beneficial in the areas of work motivation and academic output. Countless studies promote the use of flexible seating options as they encourage movement and "wiggling" during times of academic rigor. This further correlates with a positive relationship between academic presentation and rate of material absorption. In short, we learn best if we are able to meet our body's needs in the areas of comfort and positive energy / activity release.
By incorporating flexible and fidget-friendly seating options into our classroom, we will see an overall increase student work output.
We will be able to use these seating options such as the active learning stool, wobble cushions and chair balls with feet and accompanying support bands in both our whole group and small group settings. These options will improve overall work output through the allowance of positive energy release, increased spatial awareness, core balance / posture strengthening, and self-regulation improvement.
